Accessibility at Barkers
We want everyone to feel welcome at Barkers. We understand that every visitor has different needs, and we aim to make your visit as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
On this page, you’ll find useful information about accessing our store, getting around the building, available facilities and local parking, to help you plan your visit.
Arriving at the store
We have seven entrances to the store:
Entrance access: Automatic doors are located in all 3 entrances on the High Street, and at the rear entrance to the store. The arcade entrances have swing door openings. One of the arcade doors has stair access, so this is not suitable for wheelchair access. The entrance to our 1882 Café has a swing door - please ask for assistance.
Wheelchair access: Wheelchair access is great at all the entrances except the one that leads to the Beauty Hall from Barkers Arcade, as this has steps.
Assistance: If you need help when arriving, please just ask a member of staff and we will assist you where we can.
Getting around Barkers
Barkers Department Store is home to a range of departments, including fashion, beauty, shoes, homeware, gifts and our restaurants.
Floors and access: We have two floors that are open to customers. There is an escalator and a lift as well as stairs. There are ramps that connect areas where there are also steps, such as from the Beauty Hall to the Shoe Gallery. There is a lift that connects Womenswear to the White Company, as well as steps.
Walkways and displays: There is lots of space to move around inside the store. Please just ask a member of staff for any help to access anywhere that seems tight, or to get something that's out of reach.
Seating: A seat is available for customers who need to take a break. We have chairs located at different points around the whole store, including in the Shoe Gallery, Womenswear, and in the stairwells. Please just ask a member of staff if you need any help.
Staff assistance: Our team is here to help. They can help you to find exits, locate departments, carrying items to your car or around the shop.
Facilities and services
Toilets: Toilets are available in Barkers Kitchen, on the First Floor. There are steps that connect the toilets to Barkers Kitchen. Accessible toilets can be found on the First Floor, next to Phase Eight. There are toilets in the 1882 Bistro, which are connected with stairs.
Restaurants and cafés: Access into the 1882 Café is from the High Street. Access to Barkers Kitchen is via lift to the First Floor. Access to the 1882 Bistro is via lift to the First Floor, then a lift that takes you from Womenswear to The White Company. There are some steps in the 1882 Bistro that lead into one of the rooms, which means this area of the restaurant is unaccessible.
Assistance dogs: Assistance dogs are welcome anywhere in the store and restaurants.
Additional support: We have wheelchairs that can be used by customers who are shopping in the store. These are located at the rear entrance to the store.
